Besakih Temple, often called the Mother Temple of Bali, is the island’s largest and most sacred Hindu temple complex. To enter Besakih Temple, all visitors must wear a sarong, which is provided at the entrance. You are also required to wear a top that covers your shoulders—no sleeveless or strapless clothing is allowed. In accordance with Balinese custom, women who are menstruating are not permitted to enter temple grounds. These rules are strictly enforced and are an important part of showing respect to the sacred space.
The air is cooler at this high elevation, and the view from the temple complex is wide and beautiful, stretching over rice fields, valleys, and distant hills. On ceremony days, the temple becomes filled with rows of Balinese dressed in white, bringing offerings and walking in long, flowing processions. On quieter days, the atmosphere is peaceful, and the sound of chanting, bells, and incense creates a truly sacred ambiance.
